In college, I had the lucky chance to visit Germany with my choir. One of our many stops in the tour was Görlitz which borders Poland.
I’m not sure if you know this, but handmade Polish pottery rocks. And I would have never known this if Josh and I didn’t stop in this quaint shop just to look around. The store was only as big as a classroom, but it was floor to ceiling packed with Polish pottery, Wiza pottery.
Funny thing though, while in Görlitz I bought some pottery for my mother as a souvenir of sorts, but didn’t buy any for myself… I wasn’t really in the stage of life where pretty kitchenware would meet my fancy. Now, I wish I did, because I LOVE it.
Ever once in awhile I’ll run across a mug or plate at TJ Maxx, and I’ll pick it up… because 1) it’s pretty and 2) it reminds me of my visit to Deutschland.
I want to take a second to send out my thoughts and prayers to family, friends and students of Dr. David Weber. I will not claim to be a close student of his, but even the very few times that he met with me, he made a huge impact. He was an incredible teacher.
Ok, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, but Award Season is a close second. All the dramatic movies, all the pretty dresses, all the sparkly jewelry….
I’m a big lover of fashion (as I type this post in my sweatpants), but seriously I really am.
So let’s do a Sincerely Jill version of Best and Worst Dress for the 2012 Golden Globes…. I’ve always wanted to do this!
Claire Danes (WINNER): the past few years this girl has hit the bullseye pretty much every time, and of course she did again here with this J. Mendel column dress.
Michelle Williams: she’s my fashion icon hands down (hello short hair). While when I first HATED the headband and LOVED her Jason Wu dress… but the headband is growing on me… because she can just do no wrong.
Emily Blunt: this is the only picture I can find of this beauty, but it truly was a knock out.
Viola Davis: I found this dress more impacting on the TV screen then in the picture, but the rich color on her beautiful skin was breathtaking.
Diane Lane: this dress was also more stunning on the screen then in the picture, but she doesn’t age does she?
Kate Winslet: Class Act.
Ariel Winter: the little brainiac from Modern Family looking pretty in purple in this Dolce & Gabbana dress.
Zooey Deschanel (WINNER): sad day in hipster land… but she just didn’t even come close to looking her typical quirky and cute with this monstrosity of a dress and those sideburns…
Jessica Biel: she has a third boob… ‘nuf said.
Katherine McPhee: This isn’t your run-of-the-mill event. It’s the GOLDEN GLOBES… why are you wearing that dress?!
Angelina Jolie: some people loved it, but I think she looks scary…
Overall, I thought there were more people hitting than mark than missing it, but I didn’t gasp from the sheer gorgeousness of any of them…. here’s hoping The Academy Awards has some home runs.
That’s right. The hair is all gone!
I went from this….
I just love it!
One, I feel very chic, and two, it only takes like 1 minute to fix my hair. I would call that a win, win.
And you know what, I’m going to knock another item off my 101 List. I think this counts for “Do(ing) something that takes a lot of courage.” Don’t you think?
Have a Happy Monday!
I’m dreaming of the cool temperatures sweeping through my front yard… with some golden leaves rustling…. the smell of apples and cinnamon baking into perfection.
While I love the summer (just as I love all the seasons), it’s easier for me to be more creative in my outfitting because I can have more fun with layers.
Here are some inspiring layers I look forward to…
Also, remember when I was talking about how I love the ever-so-chic look of the pixie haircut? Hmmm… well did I?
I guess we’ll find out….
Have a happy weekend everybody!
Yesterday my little heart went pitter patter….. my InStyle September issue came in the mail yesterday. (I can’t wait for the Vogue one to come!)
My darling friend, Lindsey and I popped The Devil Wears Prada in the player, flipped opened that inch-thick magazine, and proceeded directly to pure bliss. We pointed out all the outfits we loved, who we loved it on, who maybe needed that dress in a different color, and who needed to get real and wear a different ensemble completely.
I obsessed over handbags. Lindsey took a liking to eye glasses and shoes…. and anything that resembled Annie Hall.
Here are some of my favorites from last night…
Mulberry Fall 2011
I love all of these looks. I particularly love what Emma Hill (designer of Mulberry) said of this collection, “She’s a posh girl gone a bit bad, living in a manor, who’s thrown her duffel coat over her evening dress to go out for a smoke.” Other than the smoking bit…. I like my lungs working fully.
You can view the entire collection at elle.com (which is where this images come from).
Brooks Brothers Black Fleece Fall 2011
My husband is one sharp dresser. I like to look at clothes for him, too. Brooks Brothers Black Fleece collection is right up his alley.
You can view the entire collection at BrooksBrothers.com.
What’s your fashion weakness and who is your favorite designer? And thanks to Lindsey for being my fashion-fiend friend!
Have a great weekend!
I’m a fickle being. Yep. I can’t seem to make up my mind on what I want because I like so many things… this trait of mine is particularly annoying when:
While moving, I ran into a particularly horrible picture of myself. It was a picture from my sophomore year of high school; my hair was dark, dark brown and I must have tweazed away all of my eyebrows… I looked straight up crazy.
I can say strongly, I know I don’t want that hair cut and color.
I’ve had short bobby hair, medium flippy layered hair, and now long hair with super grown out bangs. I’ve hit practically every blond hair color that is out there and dabbled in some brunette colors.
But my dear friends, I have had the same hair color and hair cut for the past 2 years! I’m in a rut… if I don’t do something soon I’m going to be like one of those ladies who still thinks the frizzy perm is totally rad!
I love me some red hair. It would be fun to be a redhead with all the charisma and wit that comes with it ( that does come with it right?).
But ultimately, I think I’m a blond… a blond who kind of wants to chop off all her hair. Like short. Like super short.
Short hair is spunky and darling at the same time. When done well it can be just as feminine and sexy as long hair (Dad, I know you wanted to know all of this information).
So what do you think?
I just cannot get enough of Etsy. It’s such a happy place full of wonderful items ripe for the picking.
Here are some new wonders I’ve come across in the past few minutes…
crochet pillow by emma lamb
I heart Kansas by truche
vintage bundt pan from Grandma’s Attic
a collection of succulent plants from Succulents Galore
pretty striped straws from HeyYoYo
art deco pendant necklace from acommonthread
But let’s be honest… I could just keep going and going. There hasn’t been a time where I have visited Etsy without finding a new treasure.
Happy Monday All!
Visit my guest post on Love, Julie where I share a recipe for a traditional Greek dessert, Baklava.
Ok, I know I have milked this NYC trip cow for all it’s worth. I have just one last post to share with you, and I promise I’ll move on!
I was uber excited to go shopping in New York. While Durham has so much more options than Wichita, nothin quite beats New York when it comes to shopping… well, at least in the United States.
I saved, saved, saved so I could have a little fun.
I am absolutely in total infatuation of all of my finds. Here are my favorite New York finds!
The whole long skirt trend has been quite a nice change of pace if you ask me, and I found this beauty at Madewell in Soho.
While this skirt isn’t full length, it’s easy and breezy. I feel like I either step straight out of the 1940s or Paris… don’t ask me why; it makes sense in my head.
Warm Glow Swatch
Ok, I have been wanting a Swatch watch for awhile now. Actually, I bought one… but I gave it away to my husband. You see, I can’t handle ticking. If I can hear a watch or a clock ticking, it drives me bonkers. Tick tock is fine, but straight ticking makes me a little crazy… I bet you can tell.
I also bet the lovely workers at the Swatch store in Times Square thought I was crazy when I asked for a watch that doesn’t tick…. sigh… I know… I’m weird.
But alas! They had some – no second hand equals no ticking – and I found one I love. It’s light weight and fabulous. It’s also very different than the other watches I have so I get a variety.
I also found this gorgeous dress at Madewell in Soho. This dress pictured isn’t exactly the dress I got; they don’t have the one I bought online for whatever reason. The cut is exactly the same; it’s just the print that’s different.
The scalloped sleeves and back are just adorable, but hands down the best part of this dress is the back. Look at that! Just a smidgen of skin so we all stay classy. I want to go on a date in this dress… Josh?
I hope you enjoyed my favorite finds from NYC. I have some really delicious recipes in the works that I can’t wait to share with you. Have a Happy Fourth of July weekend!
